NOVITIATE

The process of formation is mainly the work of the Holy Spirit who acts at the centre of our personal liberty and through human mediation, leads to the inner and deep understanding of the Word of God, making us live events and situations as a means of salvation. Every woman, through the Holy Spirit, therefore reaches the ‘sanctity’ to which she is called, for the benefit of all.  It is the recognition of this call which sets apart those who answer it in the religious life.

It can be a very difficult call to answer. The ‘ego’ in today’s world holds one in thrall to indulgence and materialism. To empty self, therefore, is an immense sacrifice; one that can frighten and repel.  And yet, those who have heard, answered and surrendered know beyond doubt that there could be no other way for them.  This is their vocation – not just a one time call, but a continual growing in grace in community.

The process of formation provides facilities which favour progressive and continuous growth in Christ according to the spirit and style of the Institute. It is a complete and integrated programme which embraces the whole person, including the human and Christian elements, the professional and religious aspects; and draws inspiration from the Word of God, Liturgy, Magisterium of the Church and the Constitution.

All members of the community are responsible for the formation – by witness of life, prayer and concern.

Postulancy is a formative period – normally one year -  in which the young person is helped to make a free and responsible choice of our way of life by accepting to enter the novitiate. The aim of this period of formation is:

a.                  to build up the candidate’s human and Christian formation and culture with a thorough catechesis.

b.                  to test her vocation in the community milieu.

c.                  to give her an opportunity to find out if this is the Congregation to which God is calling her.

d.                  To prepare her gradually to pass from the life of the world to life in the religious Congregation.

For admission it is required that the candidate :

w        has sufficient intellectual capacity to grasp the obligations of her calling and to acquire knowledge and skill necessary for the work of the apostolate.

w        has completed at least the Higher Secondary education or its equivalent.

w        has good physical and mental health.

w        is not less than sixteen years of age.

w        is baptized, confirmed and of free status.

At present, the Postulancy is in Goa.

Novitiate : The novitiate is a time of decisive formation for the religious life.  It offers the first lived-experience of life in the Institute.  The essential elements of this period of formation are :

w        an introduction to Sacred Scripture which must be the soul of the spiritual, doctrinal, liturgical and ascetical formation.

w        The study of the documents of the Magisterium of the Church.

w        A deeper catechesis.

w        The knowledge and observance of the Constitutions to drink deep of the spirit and charism of the Poor Sisters of Our Lady.

w        An initiation into the living of the vows in deep union with God in prayer-life.

w        To strengthen unconditional love for Christ.

w        To foster the progressive and integral development of the human person.

w        To grow in the capacity for discernment and personal responsibility.

w        To become aware of the human and social conditions in Society.

w        To grow in the love of Mary.

Novitiate is normally for a period of two years. The first year is the canonical year which focuses on religious formation.  In the second year, the novice is examined with regard to her attitude towards the apostolic activity to which the Institute is committed and to test her perseverance in prayer and union with God.

The Novitiate is conducted at Ish Prabha, Andheri, Mumbai.

Juniorate On successful completion of the novitiate, the novice makes her first vows and enters the Juniorate.  The Juniorate represents the first experience of fidelity to the vows just taken and extends from first vows to perpetual profession. During this period, which normally is of six years duration, the vows are renewed annually.

The aim of the Juniorate is :

w        Preparation for final, deliberate and mature consecration of oneself to God for life, through spiritual, doctrinal training and living.

w        Living up to the spirit of the Institute by cultivating a childlike trust in Divine Providence in all the events of life.

w        Progressive initiation into the specific apostolate of the Institute according to our charism, as a response to the call of God and of the Church integrated with a continuous personal formation for life.

Juniors are assigned to various houses of the Institute, at the discretion of the Mother General and the Council, for full exposure to the nature and work of the Institute.

At the end of this period of intense spiritual, emotional and intellectual formation the candidate should be ready for admission to perpetual profession – there is no coercion for the candidate to take this step.  On the contrary, the candidate is allowed to realize for herself that the religious state, to which she is committing herself deliberately for life, is for her a means of perfection and greater love rather than a burden too heavy to carry.

A candidate is free at any given time, during the Postulancy, Novitiate and Juniorate, to leave if she so desires.
